Candle Care and Safety

How to Care for Your Candle and Enjoy a Better Burn

Candles bring warmth, atmosphere, and comfort into a space. To enjoy them at their best, proper care is essential. Correct candle care improves burn quality, preserves fragrance, and helps your candle last longer.

Below are simple, essential tips to help you care for your candle correctly.

Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

A wick that is too long can cause a larger flame, excess soot, and uneven burning.

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to approximately 6 mm (¼ inch). This helps ensure a cleaner flame, reduces soot on the jar, and promotes an even burn.

Allow the Wax to Melt Evenly

Each time you light your candle, allow it to burn long enough for the wax to melt evenly across the surface.

The time required to achieve a full, molten wax pool depends on:

  • The size of the jar
  • The shape of the container

There is no fixed time frame. The goal is simply an even melt across the surface, which helps prevent tunneling and ensures the candle burns evenly over its lifetime.

Do Not Let the Candle Burn for Too Long

Burning a candle for extended periods can cause the wax pool to become too deep.

This may lead to:

  • The wick drowning in melted wax
  • Increased soot emission
  • Faster wax consumption

Allow the candle to cool completely before relighting to maintain optimal burn performance.

Place Candles on a Stable Surface

Always place your candle on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface. Avoid placing candles on delicate or flammable materials.

For added protection, a tray or coaster can help shield surfaces from heat.

Keep Candles Away from Drafts

Drafts from windows, fans, or air conditioning can cause uneven burning and soot buildup.

For best results, place candles in a calm area with minimal air movement.

Candle Safety at Home

Candles should always be treated as an open flame.

  • Never leave a candle burning unattended
  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets
  • Never move a candle while it is lit

When stored, keep candles in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight.

With proper care, your candle will burn more cleanly, evenly, and safely.
